Welcome to the CCCryo website and our online catalogue. The Culture Collection of Cryophilic Algae is hosted at the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology at its Branch for Bioanalytics and Bioprocesses (IZI-BB) in Potsdam-Golm near Berlin. The CCCryo is specialised on cryophilic freshwater and permafrost microalgae from polar and alpine environments, the so-called snow algae. First strains were collected on an expedition to Spitsbergen in 1999 and since then research on the phylogeny, ecology, and adaptations of this group of extremophiles is being performed at our institute.
The CCCryo serves as a bioresource of extremophiles for public and industrial research. Strains may be ordered via these websites. For detailed information on current studies performed at the IZI-BB please refer to the website of the institution's group Extremophile Research.
ECCO, WFCC and other database resources
The CCCryo is a member of the European Culture Collections’ Organisation (ECCO) and is registered at the World Federation of Culture Collections (WFCC) as WDCM940. Strains or species may also be searched via the Global Catalogue of Microorganisms. We are also dataset providers for the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).
Last database update: 17-March-2023
Interrruption of Service
Between 13-March and 25-April 2023 no orders will be processed due to absence of staff. You are welcome to submit your order by mail, but these will be processed once again after 25-April. Thanks
NEW coexisting bacterial and fungal isolates available
We have added a number of bacteria and yeasts/fungi that we have isolated from non-axenic snow algal strains to our CCCryo. These isolates should represent organisms that coexisted with the snow algae in their natural habitat and thus, can serve for studies on interactions and nutrient supply strategies in snow algae communities. Their strain number starts with that of the alga they were associated with (e.g. 060-99) followed by a "_F" (fungus/yeast) or "_B" (bacteria) and the year in which it was isolated from the algal strain (e.g. "-21") making up a strain number as e.g. "060-99_F1-21". In the "browse strains" list they are listed after the respective algal strain.
